AN-309 Transition Curve

When a machine moves along a path where a circular arc meets a linear sector at a continuous path speed a step change in acceleration occurs.

This step change in acceleration can set up vibrations in a machine so is best avoided.

The transition curve facility allows an arc to have an entry and exit spiral section.

In these spiral sectors the curvature changes gradually from zero to the main arc section curvature resulting in a gradual change of acceleration and less machine vibration.
